Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said on Sunday, June 1, that Ukraine would not be able to become a full member of NATO in the foreseeable future.

"To be realistic, Ukraine will not become a member of NATO in the short term," Brekelmans said in an interview with CNBC.

However, the minister stressed that the Netherlands would be happy to welcome President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky at any event of the upcoming NATO summit on June 24-25 in The Hague.

There are no meetings of the Ukraine—NATO Council within the framework of the meeting. At the same time, the alliance members intend to hold a parallel defense industry forum, in which the Ukrainian leader will be able to participate.

On April 4, the Secretary General of the alliance, Mark Rutte, announced that no one had promised Ukraine to join NATO immediately after the end of the conflict. He noted that the alliance had previously only promised Kiev an irreversible path to membership in the organization.
