From May 31 to June 1, Russian Sports Minister and President of the Russian Olympic Committee Mikhail Degtyarev paid a working visit to Serbia. The trip was dedicated to the development of bilateral cooperation in the field of physical culture and sports.

The main event was a meeting with Serbian Sports Minister Zoran Gajic, during which the parties signed a memorandum of cooperation between the relevant departments of the two countries.

"As Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin says, the strategic partnership between Russia and Serbia has deep historical roots. I am sure that our sports ties will only grow stronger," Degtyarev emphasized.

During the visit, the Minister noted the active participation of Russian athletes in competitions and training camps in Serbia and expressed gratitude to the Serbian side for their "principled and consistent position against discrimination in sports."

In addition, Degtyarev also laid flowers at the Eternal Flame and the monument to the Red Army Soldier in Belgrade and attended friendly matches of the men's and women's volleyball teams of Russia and Serbia. According to him, the republic takes a firm position: sport should unite, not divide, emphasizing the importance of sports unity.

It is noted that plans to expand cooperation, including the exchange of students and sports delegations, were discussed during the trip. The Minister announced the readiness of Russian universities to accept Serbian students under special quotas.

On May 9, Putin said that Russia highly appreciates Serbia's independent and sovereign course in international affairs. According to him, the Russian state remains the guarantor of the republic's security, providing about 85% of the country's total energy needs.
