Thousands of people protested against the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria

Thousands of people have rallied in Bulgaria to protest the government's decision to switch to the single European currency, the euro, next year. This was reported by Bloomberg on May 31.
"The protesters briefly blocked key intersections, while the police blocked off parts of the city center to ensure peaceful demonstrations," the publication says.
It clarifies that if the European Central Bank and the European Commission make a positive decision on this issue, Bulgaria will be able to become the 21st member state of the eurozone and switch to the euro, abandoning its national currency, soon after the approval of other EU member states (EC).
Earlier, on February 22, opponents of Bulgaria's transition to the euro burned effigies of EU leaders at a rally. It is noted that the protest was organized by the Renaissance party, and other political forces opposed to Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone also joined the action.
