Witkoff called the Hamas response to the US proposal on Gaza "unacceptable"

US President's Special Envoy Stephen Witkoff on Saturday, May 31, called the response of the Palestinian radical movement Hamas to the United States' proposal for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip "unacceptable" and throwing back negotiations.
"I have received a response from Hamas to the United States proposal. It is completely unacceptable and only sets us back," Witkoff wrote on his Facebook page. Twitter).
He added that Hamas was "obligated" to accept the American framework proposal as the basis for future negotiations.
"This is the only way we will be able to conclude a 60-day ceasefire agreement in the coming days, as a result of which half of the living hostages and half of those who died will be returned home to their families," the special envoy added.
Earlier in the day, Hamas conveyed to the mediators its response to Witkoff's proposal on Gaza. The movement's response includes demands for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) units from there, and the provision of humanitarian aid.
On May 28, it became known that Hamas had agreed to Whitkoff's proposal for the Gaza Strip. It was clarified that the US initiative also implies the creation of a professional committee that will take over the management of Gaza's affairs immediately after the announcement of the agreement. The next day, Israel signed a proposal by Witkoff and US President Donald Trump for a ceasefire in the semi-enclave.
