US President Donald Trump is seeking to improve relations with Russia. This was announced on May 31 by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, an American economist and director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University (New York).

"Trump is trying to turn everything around again, despite his absent—mindedness, limited capabilities and a superficial understanding of the situation. But he's still trying to fix everything," he said in an interview with TASS.

However, according to Sachs, the president is surrounded by numerous institutions and congressional representatives who oppose peaceful dialogue and insist on confrontation. This creates instability in all his attempts to improve relations with Russia.

The economist also stressed that Trump's personal ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin are not just words. He pointed to a problem that Putin raised a few years ago.

"American presidents come to power with some of their own ideas, and then people in dark suits with briefcases come to them - and, I would add, in blue ties (blue in the US political system is associated with the Democratic Party. — Ed.) — and explain the reality to them. In other words, they are being made to understand that peace cannot be concluded, and Russia must be fought," Sachs said.

According to him, such changes in approaches lead to the loss of initial ideas and plans. The professor noted the existence of the so-called deep state in the United States, which has been pursuing a harsh anti-Russian policy for many decades and continues to influence the country's foreign policy.

On May 30, Politico reported that Trump is seeking to restore relations with Russia more than to achieve peace in Ukraine. Earlier, on May 27, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the United States had begun to better understand Russia's position on the Ukrainian conflict. According to him, time will tell how the real actions of the American administration will correspond to the stated intentions.
