Dmitry Gorin, Vice President of the Russian Union of Travel Industry (PCT), told Izvestia on May 31 about the situation with the chikungunya virus in the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

"Travel companies do not record an increase in the number of tourists there related to the aforementioned virus," he said.

Gorin also said that in May, the number of insurance claims for all types of diseases in countries, including Maldives, Sri Lanka and Thailand, decreased by 3-5%. This confirms that the information about the outbreak of the disease in Male is not true.

According to the PCT Vice-president, the largest number of tourist appeals is related to colds, gastrointestinal disorders and injuries.

He added that the chikungunya virus is subject to insurance, and urged tourists to consult doctors at the first symptoms. Gorin also recommended taking precautions while resting.

On May 26, the Russian Embassy reported that Sri Lanka had recorded the largest outbreak of chikungunya fever in 20 years. The disease is transmitted through the bites of yellow-horned mosquitoes, which are most active during the daytime. The symptoms of infection appear within 2-12 days after infection and include severe joint pain, fever, and skin rash.
