In the northern part of Korsakov (Sakhalin region) in the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk, work has begun on the elimination of sunken ships. This is reported by SakhalinMedia news agency with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Transport and Road Management of the Sakhalin region.
In total, 11 vessels are planned to be disposed of in 2025-2026. The contractor has already started to pull the first one.
"In accordance with the documentation agreed upon by Rosprirodnadzor and the captain of the Korsakov seaport, the ship's hull is planned to be pulled ashore by tracked vehicles through a block system, where it will be cut into pieces and transported to the disposal site," commented Maxim Zhogolev, Minister of Transport and Road Management.
The news agency clarifies that the work on lifting the wrecks is carried out within the framework of the federal project "General Cleaning", which since 2025 has become part of the national project "Environmental well-being". A total of 24 facilities are planned to be raised from the water by 2030 according to the national project.
Over the past three years, 72 sunken ships have been disposed of in the Sakhalin Region. Funds from the processing of more than 3 thousand tons of scrap metal have replenished the regional treasury.
