The doctor talked about the main functions of vitamin D

Vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining human health. Its main sources are sunlight, oily fish and eggs, but many people face a deficiency of this vitamin, especially in winter and in regions with limited sunlight. Irina Chekmareva, a cardiologist at the Semeynaya clinic, told Izvestia about the main functions of the vitamin on May 31.
According to her, vitamin D is central to bone mineralization and maintaining bone health.
"Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine. Without sufficient vitamin D levels, calcium absorption may decrease, leading to a lack of this mineral, which is essential for bone tissue. Vitamin D activates osteoblasts, the cells responsible for synthesizing new bone tissue. This helps not only to form bones in childhood, but also to maintain their health in adults," said Chekmareva.
She stressed that rickets in children can be one of the consequences of vitamin D deficiency. This disease causes bone deformities, stunted growth, and general malaise.
"In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, a disease in which there is a loss of bone mass and strength, which increases the risk of fractures, especially in the elderly," the doctor noted.
Vitamin deficiency can also interfere with the development and activation of T-lymphocytes, which are important cells of the immune system responsible for recognizing and destroying pathogens. A decrease in vitamin D levels can increase the risk of infections and colds.
"Some studies show that vitamin D deficiency may be associated with an increased risk of developing various cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, coronary heart disease and heart failure," Chekmareva emphasized.
According to the therapist, vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk of depression and anxiety disorders. This may be due to the fact that vitamin D affects the level of serotonin— a neurotransmitter that regulates mood. In addition, vitamin D may have an effect on cognitive function. Some studies point to a link between vitamin D deficiency and memory loss as we age, the expert added.
The doctor also gave recommendations on the prevention of vitamin D deficiency. She advised spending more time in the sun, but not forgetting to protect your skin from UV rays. It is also recommended to include foods rich in vitamin D in your diet. It is worth paying attention to oily fish (salmon, mackerel), egg yolks and fortified dairy products. In addition, if necessary, the therapist advised discussing with the doctor the dosage of supplements to regulate vitamin levels.
On May 30, Tamila Agayeva, an endocrinologist at the Semeynaya clinic network, told Izvestia about the symptoms and treatment of hypothyroidism. Endocrine disease may not manifest itself for a long time. Usually, patients may complain of fatigue, drowsiness, weight gain, hair loss, and decreased mood. In severe cases, edema, bradycardia, anemia, and even dementia develop. The doctor explained that both types of hypothyroidism are treated with hormone replacement therapy.
