The endocrinologist named the reasons for weight gain with a healthy lifestyle

Not all people who face the problem of being overweight lead an unhealthy lifestyle and regularly transmit. Most of them just spend fewer calories than they consume. As a result, the extra grams accumulate unnoticeably over a long period of time and become burdensome kilograms, endocrinologist, chief physician of the family clinic "Dr. ANNA" Anna Marchenko told Izvestia on June 10.
According to her, there are several reasons why a person can gain excess weight, even while following a healthy lifestyle.
"Even if you don't overuse fast food, sweets and prefer healthy food, it may still be too much in your particular case. It is very important not only to monitor nutrition, but also to maintain a balance of physical activity. Even if you eat only vegetable salads, but you don't move at all, there is a risk of gaining extra weight," she noted.
The doctor emphasized that in order to maintain the health of the main body systems, it is recommended to walk for at least one hour a day. This does not mean that a person should get up and go somewhere for an hour. This is a motor activity that a person performs throughout the day.
"The more you move, the more calories you spend, so before you cut back on your diet and go on diets, try to start moving more.: walk wherever possible, sign up for the sports section," Marchenko advised.
However, the metabolism slows down with age. For example, at the age of 20, it is quite easy to fight excess weight, and after 40 it is difficult. This happens because the body ages. With age, muscle mass naturally decreases, which the body spends several times more calories on maintaining.
"Many people have not reviewed their diet and exercise regime for decades. And this is a fundamentally wrong approach, because you need to take into account not only caloric intake and basic recommendations, but also age, so as not to gain extra pounds over time. Ideally, you need to review your diet and exercise regime every five years," the doctor added.
Sometimes, even despite a healthy lifestyle and following all the recommendations, people start to gain weight for no apparent reason. The problem may be a violation of the balance of estrogens, progesterone and testosterone, thyroid hormones and insulin resistance. This may be due to age-related changes in the body or endocrine diseases. Menopausal women are often at such risk. Sex hormones slow down their activity, and some people note that the weight suddenly began to grow and does not go away, despite all efforts, the expert added.
"Thyroid disorders can occur at any age, and insulin resistance develops either as a result of a genetic predisposition, or due to an unhealthy diet high in carbohydrates, lack of fiber and protein. If obesity is associated with hormonal disorders, the situation can be corrected by taking medications, but only a doctor can prescribe them, and the whole process should be supervised," Marchenko stressed.
In order to determine if you are overweight, you need to divide the weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. The resulting figure is called the body mass index (BMI). If it is more than 24.9, then there are extra pounds.
"It is necessary to think seriously and start losing weight if you have a BMI of 27 or more. If you can't adjust your body weight on your own, you should consult a doctor. Now there are a large number of methods that allow you to bring BMI back to normal without starvation, strict diets," concluded Marchenko.
Earlier, on January 29, Natia Chekhoeva, a gastroenterologist and endoscopist at the Gastro Clinic, told Izvestia that the systematic consumption of excessive calories inevitably overloads the body. This not only increases body weight, but also puts a strain on internal organs, including the heart, liver, and pancreas.
