The Charlemagne Prize, which is awarded to individuals who have contributed to the unification of Europe, has a pronounced ideological significance, and the award of the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen once again confirms the support of the anti-Russian course from the European elites. Dmitry Bunevich, an adviser to the director of the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISS) and a political scientist, shared this opinion with Izvestia on May 30.

This is how he commented on the awarding of the Charlemagne Prize to von der Leyen.

"The awarding of the von der Leyen Prize is a marker that her course — and it is primarily associated with the struggle, with countering Russia and consolidating Europe on an anti—Russian platform — is supported and approved by European elites," he stressed.

The political scientist noted that it was under the leadership of von der Leyen that the EC openly announced that Russia was the main opponent of the European Union (EU).

"The awarding of this award is very significant, first of all, from an ideological, ideological point of view. <...> Europe has switched to military tracks, declared Russia its national enemy and has been fighting it for three and a half years at the hands of the Kiev regime," Bunevich summed up.

He added that despite the support of some Eurosceptics by the people, the European authorities are acting quite smoothly.

"At the public level, Europe has become more divided, but if we look at concrete political steps, at real decisions on the supply of weapons to the regime of [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky and so on, then we see that the European Union under the leadership of von der Leyen is acting, unfortunately, in a rather consolidated manner," Bunevich concluded.

MEP Martin Sonneborn said on May 29 that von der Leyen should be rewarded not for her contribution to the unity of the EU, but for its destruction. He also added that since von der Leyen's appearance in the European Parliament, debts, militarization and economic decline could be observed in the EU.
