The first day of summer is notable for many reasons. This is not only the beginning of the warmest and sunniest season of the year, but also an occasion to spend time with your family, because it marks one of the oldest and most significant international holidays — Children's Day.

The impetus for the celebration was the First World War, after which tens of thousands of children and teenagers lost their parents and found themselves on the verge of poverty. In this regard, in 1924, the League of Nations adopted the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which guaranteed minors the right to education, shelter, food and assistance in difficult situations, as well as protection from any form of exploitation.

A year later, at the World Conference on the Welfare of Children in Geneva, it was proposed to establish an International Children's Day. Although the conference participants did not reach an agreement on its date, some countries added the celebration to their national calendars.

The holiday became truly global in 1950 thanks to the efforts of the International Democratic Federation of Women. It was her participants who suggested celebrating Children's Day on June 1. Since then, the date has become official for six dozen countries, including Russia.

The first day of summer was also celebrated in Russia. According to the national calendar, it coincided with the feast of Ivan the Long. The name of the celebration is due to the fact that June 1 was at the height of field work. They worked a lot, and they often left for the fields before dark, and returned in the evening, which made the day seem very long. However, complaining about the difficulties was not accepted. On the contrary, it was believed that a person who worked well for Ivan the Long would live in prosperity all year round.

The most long-awaited event on Ivan the Long was the rain. The ancestors believed that rainwater on a holiday has healing properties, can nourish the earth and strengthen people's health. Therefore, if there were any precipitation, they did not hide, on the contrary, they tried to get a little wet. Girls and women collected rainwater for washing to prolong their youth and give their skin radiance.

The ancestors tried not to shed tears on Ivan the Long. It was believed that crying could lead to a rainy summer, and high humidity could have a bad effect on crops. It was also forbidden to wear dirty clothes on June 1. The intruder risked attracting the attention of evil spirits. For the same reason, mothers did not leave young children unattended — they were afraid that evil spirits could frighten the kids and make them stutter. In addition, on a holiday, one should not be jealous, idle, or quarrel with anyone.

In the modern world, folk traditions and rituals are a thing of the past, but for many people, the first day of summer remains a significant event.
