Russians deposited 235 tons of small change in banks during the Coin Week

More than 51 million coins worth almost 242 million rubles were returned to monetary circulation by Russians during the annual Coin Week campaign. This was announced on May 30 by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.
"People handed over 235 tons of small change to banks and shops, which is 17.5% more than last fall. Half of the total weight is coins in denominations of 1, 2 and 5 rubles, which are most in demand in stores," the Central Bank said in a publication on its website.
New retail outlets joined the Coin Week campaign, and residents of 3,058 settlements were also able to participate.
It is specified that most of the coins were collected by residents of Moscow, the Moscow region, St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, as well as the Krasnodar Territory.
In February, the press service of the Central Bank of Russia explained the reason for the return to use in 2022 of paper banknotes in denominations of 5 and 10 rubles along with coins. According to her, the population has become more willing to use paper money after its quality has improved.
