Aromatherapy is a powerful tool in the fight against depression. Certain aromatic oils have a positive effect on the emotional background, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation, Roman Oparin, associate professor of the Department of General Biology and Bioecology at the State University of Education, told Izvestia on May 31.

"Lavender is one of the most popular oils with a soothing effect. Helps reduce stress levels and promotes good sleep. Apply it in a diffuser or add a few drops to a warm bath in the evening," he said.

According to him, the sweet and fresh scent of lemon balm fills with energy and lifts the mood, helps to reduce stress and anxiety. You can try using lemon balm oil in combination with other oils, such as orange, grapefruit or lemon, to create a citrus bouquet.

"Neroli oil, obtained from bitter orange blossoms, has a sweet and floral aroma that can help to cope with feelings of anxiety and depression. This oil is known for its amazing effect on the emotional state — it promotes relaxation and improves overall well-being. Use it in a diffuser or add it to body masks," Oparin added.

At the same time, rosemary oil has a fresh, herbal fragrance that helps increase mindfulness and concentration, reduce stress levels, and help with mental fatigue. The expert advised using rosemary oil in the diffuser during operation to increase productivity, or adding it to massage mixtures to improve blood circulation.

"Create your own personal "fragrant corner". Its attributes can be a diffuser with your favorite oils, candles or scented pillows that will accompany you during your vacation. Use aromatherapy in combination with meditation or yoga. For example, add a few drops of lavender to the bath before meditation for deeper relaxation. Experiment. Keep an aromatherapy diary, recording your feelings and results from using certain oils," Oparin said.

At the same time, you need to keep security in mind. Before using essential oils on the skin, it is necessary to check them for allergies. It is worth using base oils — for example, coconut oil — for dilution to avoid irritation.

Earlier, on April 26, nutritionist Dmitry Semiryadov told Izvestia that too frequent use of smartphones and computers can increase stress levels. In addition, excessive consumption of caffeine, which is found in coffee, tea, and chocolate, can increase anxiety and harm sleep.
