- The political scientist predicted a scenario of a reset in relations between Russia and the United States

The reset of relations between Russia and the United States may involve normalization in all areas of cooperation, and first of all, it may be about economic cooperation. Political scientist Nikolai Topornin expressed this opinion on Friday, May 30.
He clarified that the United States has a very extensive sanctions list, which includes individuals and legal entities, large groups of goods are prohibited from export, almost all electronics, and financial relations are also complicated.
"Banks are under sanctions, there are no direct flights, consulates are operating normally, humanitarian contacts have been interrupted, and there are no tourist exchanges. And you can continue like this indefinitely," Topornin said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
The political scientist recalled that Russia and the United States today have practically no bilateral multi-format relations. Everything, he said, boils down to political dialogue and diplomatic contacts. According to Topornin, US President Donald Trump, on the contrary, is interested in extracting maximum profit from bilateral relations, which implies the need for a reset.
"He probably thinks that it would be nice for American companies to return to the Russian market and make money. Maybe he will propose some kind of infrastructure project in the energy sphere. Trump has already said that he is ready to lease the Nord Stream pipeline in order to transport Russian gas through it. So, of course, the American leader has commercial interests related to Russia. He sees many possibilities. But so far, everything is running into a complicated settlement of the Ukrainian conflict," the source explained. Lenta.Ru .
Earlier, on May 29, Reuters reported that Trump was not losing hope that he would be able to establish economic cooperation with Moscow. According to the agency, some Republicans in the US Congress and White House advisers are calling on Trump to adopt new anti-Russian sanctions. The American leader himself has long considered them "unnecessary and often ineffective."
On May 26, The Wall Journal Street reported that Trump was considering the possibility of imposing sanctions against Russia due to the deterioration of relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The restrictions probably won't include new banking sanctions, but other pressure options are being discussed to force him to make concessions at the negotiating table, including a 30-day cease-fire.
