To reduce the risk of infection with norovirus, the quality of food and water consumed should be monitored, as well as hygiene during meals. On May 30, Sergey Voznesensky, an infectious disease specialist and associate professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the RUDN University Medical Institute, told Izvestia.

"All prevention is non-specific. This includes control of water supply sources and quality control of products at all stages, from production to the refrigerator. Control of persons who have access to our food, and compliance with personal hygiene measures when eating," he explained.

Among the symptoms of norovirus infection, the specialist listed fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and loose stools.

According to him, it is almost impossible to clinically distinguish norovirus from rotavirus or other diarrhea of viral etiology. Voznesensky clarified that without laboratory confirmation, even a specialist cannot always establish an appropriate diagnosis.

On the night of May 30, Rospotrebnadzor reported the discovery of norovirus in passengers of the Mikhail Bulgakov motor ship en route from St. Petersburg to Moscow. The patients were isolated, and no severe cases of the disease were observed. According to Rospotrebnadzor, non-compliance with sanitary and epidemiological requirements was recorded during the inspections.

A criminal case has been opened on the established fact under Part 1 of Article 236 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of sanitary and epidemiological rules that negligently caused mass illness or poisoning of people or created a threat of such consequences").
