- In the United States, the commissioner who headed the New York police during the September 11 terrorist attack died.

Commissioner Bernard Kerik, who headed the New York Police Department during the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, died at the age of 70. This was announced on May 30 by the head of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Kesh Patel.
"Today we mourn the loss of Bernard B. Kerik, a warrior, patriot, and one of the most courageous public servants this country has ever known. Bernie tragically passed away on May 29, 2025 after battling an illness," he wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
According to Patel, the commissioner has dedicated his life to protecting the American people. The FBI chief emphasized that Kerik's legacy lies not only in medals and titles, but also in the lives saved, in the city he helped rebuild, and "in the country he served with honor."
Kerik has served in law enforcement and national security agencies for more than 40 years. He took up the post of Police Commissioner in August 2000. During the terrorist attack that destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center, he was the 40th commissioner of the New York Police Department.
According to The New York Times (NYT), Kerik received praise for his account of the September 11 tragedy. It is specified that he hurried to the place to speed up the evacuation of the World Trade Center. At the same time, the police were bombarded with debris from the collapse of the towers, as a result they were temporarily trapped in a neighboring building.
