US President Donald Trump has no plans to send an American delegation to direct talks between Russia and Ukraine on the settlement of the conflict in Istanbul. This was reported on May 2 by The Atlantic magazine, citing sources.
"The United States has no plans to send a delegation, but White House aides have said that Trump wants to see progress," the article says.
Although Trump has been talking with aides about the introduction of new anti-Russian sanctions in recent days, according to the newspaper, he expects a new round of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations.
According to one of the external advisers, the American leader is furious, but at the same time wants to make a deal. It clarifies that Trump is trying to find the best way to reach an agreement. The source also urged to believe Trump when he talks about the possible withdrawal of the United States from the negotiation process.
On May 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that the second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine would be held in Istanbul on June 2. He expressed the hope that all parties interested in the success of the peace process would provide support for a new round of discussions.
On the same day, the head of the Russian delegation, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Medinsky, invited the Ukrainian Minister of Defense and the head of the Ukrainian delegation to negotiations with Russia, Rustem Umerov, to meet to exchange memoranda with a position on a cease-fire and conflict resolution. According to Medinsky, Russia is ready for a "meaningful" discussion of an agreement to end the Ukrainian conflict. Umerov said that Ukraine had submitted its draft memorandum to Russia and was waiting for the Russian version of the document.
