US President Donald Trump seeks to restore relations with Russia more than to achieve peace in Ukraine. This was reported by Politico on May 29, citing sources.

"It's quite obvious that something is holding him (Trump. — Ed.) from actually putting more pressure on [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. He may want a reset of relations with Russia more than anything, even more than peace in Ukraine," the newspaper quoted one of the European officials as saying.

According to Politico, if the head of the White House wants to end the Ukrainian conflict, then he is supposedly assessing the possible consequences of a deterioration in relations with Russia.

On May 27, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the United States had begun to better understand Russia's position on Ukraine. According to him, time will tell how the real actions of the American administration will correspond to the stated intentions.

Prior to that, on May 15, Ryabkov said that the restoration of relations between the Russian Federation and the United States is an extremely difficult and time-consuming process. He also stressed that although the issue of Ukraine is of great importance, it is not the only factor that will be taken into account when planning contacts between the parties.
