The first case of infection with a new variant of monkeypox (mpox) was recorded in Australia. This was reported on May 30 by SBS News TV channel with reference to the Ministry of Health of New South Wales.

"The first case of the mpox strain, which usually causes more serious illnesses, has been reported in Australia," the publication says.

According to a representative of the Federal Department of Health, a person who returned from a trip turned out to be ill. The Ministry of Health noted that the man contracted the virus on vacation in Thailand.

It is specified that at the moment the man has recovered. The risk of further spread of the disease is low.

On April 27, The Guardian Nigeria newspaper reported 177 cases of smallpox infection in Sierra Leone in two days. According to the publication, the largest number of diseases was recorded in Freetown.
