Volcanic activity experts are concerned about the increase in seismic activity in the area of the Campi Flegrei supervolcano, as its eruption "would plunge the planet into chaos." This was reported on May 29 by the British newspaper Daily Star.

"Scientists have warned that one of the world's supervolcanoes is waking up — an eruption could lead to devastating consequences for millions of people living around the volcano," the publication says.

It is specified that over the past six months, more than 3 thousand earthquakes have been registered in this region, and in May 2025, a 4.4 magnitude tremor occurred — the most powerful in the last 40 years.

The article recalled that about 40 thousand years ago, the mega-eruption of the Phlegrean fields became one of the most global volcanic disasters in the history of our planet. So, if it happened again today, the consequences would go far beyond Italy. Ash clouds would form over most of Europe, which would lead to the suspension of flights, lack of sunlight and unpredictable weather, the newspaper explained.

On May 13, an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred in the large volcanic area of the Phlegrean Fields in Italy. It is noted that the tremor was recorded west of Naples at 12:07 local time (13:07 GMT), the epicenter was at a depth of 3 km.
