The holiday season is beginning, and reading is considered one of the traditional leisure activities. Victoria Nurmukhamedova, head of marketing communications at the Bukvoed network, told Izvestia on May 30 about books that should be put in a suitcase to pass the time on the road or relax on vacation.

For fans of detective stories, she recommended tense stories with an unexpected ending. For example, Eric Foucier's "Bureau of Dark Affairs" tells the story of a young aristocrat, Valentin Vernet, who lives in France in the 1830s. This brilliant but unrecognized detective is hunting for the elusive criminal Vicar.

Another book is All-in. Author Jennifer Lynn Barnes tells how a team of profiler geniuses investigates a series of ritual murders in Vegas, where each victim is marked with a mysterious code. At the same time, the team leader gets a chance to uncover the mystery of his mother's disappearance, a case that has remained unsolved for many years.

For fans of light reading, narratives about family, friendship, moral choice and first love are suitable. Nurmukhamedova advised Natalia Polyanskaya to read Books, Coffee and Tails. The main character Polina Dementieva is a mysterious Internet star. Her live broadcasts, where acute social issues are raised, attract thousands of viewers. But there is one mystery: no one has ever seen the face of the presenter. The only thing that subscribers know is her faithful companion, the cat Sparkle. This is a kind book for lovers of cats and romantic prose.

Fans of the non-fiction genre may be interested in "Hawks and Harlots. How the poets of the Silver Age lived, loved and died" by Maxim Zhegalin.

"The documentary narrates an entire epoch from 1905 to 1921, and in the center is the fate of the poets of the Silver Age. They are intertwined in a very mysterious way. Thanks to this book, we can see the characters as real people with their stories, strengths and weaknesses, and not as frozen portraits on the wall in the literature room," Nurmukhamedova said.

She also recommended reading Jeff White's "Criminal Network." Investigative journalist White shows the evolution of hacking from an amateur to a professional level.

For fans of fantasy and science fiction, "The Magpie on the Gallows" by Eduard Verkin is suitable.

"This is a classic story about an ideal world where diseases, wars, hunger, and old age are defeated. Humanity is successfully exploring outer space. But by chance, the fate of the inhabitants of planet Earth will have to be decided by a simple keeper of the reserve," the expert clarified.

Another book, "The Mystery of the Dead Rector" by Viktor Dashkevich, is a continuation of the cult series about investigations in magical St. Petersburg. In the Moscow witchcraft Academy, the rector is killed under mysterious circumstances, and the strongest diva breaks free. The investigation of the case is entrusted to Count Averin. The mystical atmosphere, the complicated relationship between the characters, the intense plot — all this awaits fans of intellectual fantasy in the new novel.

If you want new experiences, you should pay attention to Samantha Harvey's "In Orbit". The novel won the Booker Prize in 2024. He talks about just one day spent by astronauts on the ISS. But, according to the expert, it seems that in terms of the depth of emotions, they were able to live a lifetime that day. The novel belongs to the category of "philosophical prose" and will be interesting to those who like to talk about how this world works and are looking for answers to eternal questions.

Earlier, on May 19, it was reported that fantasy, detective, science fiction, psychology, and romance novels are the most popular genres of books. Among the Russians surveyed, more than a third (34%) of the respondents read any books. Another 18% prefer fiction, 8% prefer professional literature for work and study, and 6% prefer documentary or historical literature. This is stated in the results of a study by experts from UCassa (a service for accepting online and offline payments from the fintech company Humopeu) and the Litres electronic and audio book service.
