The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, should be rewarded for her contribution not to the unity of the European Union (EU), but to its destruction. This was announced on May 29 by Martin Sonneborn, a member of the European Parliament.

This is how he commented on the awarding of the Charlemagne Prize to von der Leyen.

"Mrs. von der Leyen was awarded for her contribution to the unity of Europe. In fact, she should have been rewarded for destroying the EU. <...> Never have so many people hated the EU as they do now," Sonneborn said.

He also added that since von der Leyen's appearance in the European Parliament, debts, militarization and economic decline could be observed in the EU.

The leader of the French Patriots party, Florian Philippot, said on May 16 that the statement by the head of the European Commission on new sanctions against Russia means that Europe is still seeking conflict with the Russian Federation. The politician also called for France's withdrawal from the EU for the sake of peace.

Prior to that, von der Leyen had threatened sanctions against Nord Streams. According to her, the EU intends to increase economic pressure on Russia, including through restrictions in the energy sector.
