Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder associated with a deficiency of thyroid hormones. Tamila Agayeva, an endocrinologist at the Semeynaya clinic network, told Izvestia about the causes, symptoms and modern treatment methods on May 30.

The specialist explained that there are two types of the disease. Primary hypothyroidism, which occurs in most cases, is associated with pathologies of the thyroid gland itself. It most often develops due to autoimmune thyroiditis, when the immune system attacks thyroid cells, reducing thyroxine production. Other reasons may include thyroid surgery, the use of radioactive iodine or thyrostatics.

Secondary hypothyroidism, which accounts for no more than 1% of cases, occurs due to disorders in the pituitary gland, which stops producing thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). At the same time, the thyroid gland itself can be absolutely healthy.

"The complaints of a person suffering from hypothyroidism are very nonspecific and insignificant. The symptoms can go unnoticed for a long time. However, over time, a lack of hormones causes disruption of other organs and body systems," the endocrinologist noted.

According to her, patients may complain of fatigue, drowsiness, weight gain, hair loss and decreased mood. In severe cases, edema, bradycardia, anemia, and even dementia develop.

The doctor explained that both types of hypothyroidism are treated with hormone replacement therapy. Modern thyroxine preparations are completely identical to the hormone produced by the thyroid gland, so they do not cause side effects.

Earlier, on April 24, Galina Smirnova, an endocrinologist at the Scandinavian Health Center, told Izvestia that those who experience drowsiness and low mood in the spring will benefit from gentle physical activity and a light diet with sufficient vitamins. According to her, urban residents are particularly susceptible to spring asthenia.
