The US Department of Public Administration Efficiency (DOGE) is not coping with its primary task of reducing costs, as federal costs have increased by 8.7% since the return of US President Donald Trump to the White House. Bloomberg columnist Justin Fox wrote about this on May 29.

"Since January 21, expenses have increased by 8.7% compared to the same period in 2024 and by 7.2% compared to 2023," he cites the data.

In the 2025 fiscal year (from October to April), expenses increased by 7%, despite cuts in some departments. As Fox notes, the increase in costs is caused by the expansion of social programs, for example, Social Security and Medicare, as well as interest payments on the national debt.

"Social Security, defense, and interest payments have accounted for 76% of expenses since Trump took office," the article says.

Nevertheless, tax revenues increased by 13% over the same period, which helped to reduce the budget deficit somewhat. The main contribution was made by taxes on personal income.

"Revenue from customs duties and some excise duties increased by 82%," Fox writes.

On May 24, entrepreneur Elon Musk announced his intention to cease active political activity in DOGE. The entrepreneur clarified that he wants to focus on the development of Tesla and SpaceX.

Later, on May 29, the billionaire announced that his term of office as a special civil servant was coming to an end. He thanked Trump for the "opportunity to reduce wasteful spending" by the government.
