- A glacier that broke off in the Alps almost completely destroyed a village in Switzerland

The village of Blatten was destroyed by 90% as a result of the break-off of a large part of the glacier from the Alps. This was reported on May 28 by The Guardian newspaper.
According to a government statement, the glacier also filled up the nearby Lonza riverbed.
"At the moment, I can say that about 90% of the village is flooded or destroyed, so there has been a major disaster here in Blatten," said Stefan Ganzer, head of security in the southern Valais region.
According to him, at the moment there is a risk of deterioration of the situation. The mayor of Blatten, Matthias Belwald, in turn, said that Switzerland had lost the village, but promised to restore it.
Most of the village was damaged due to the flow of ice, mud and rocks. In early May, an evacuation took place in the village amid the risk of a landslide, clarifies "Газета.Ru ".
On March 4, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) reported the stranding of the world's largest iceberg A23a off the island of South Georgia in the Atlantic. BAS oceanographer Andrew Meyers noted that the glacier's collision with the bottom lifted nutrients from the depths.
According to him, this should have contributed to increasing the availability of food in the region, including for penguins and seals.
