A strong magnetic storm has begun on Earth

A strong magnetic storm began on Earth, the power level of which is close to G3, the highest fluctuations were recorded in the morning. This was announced on May 29 by Sergey Bogachev, head of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
"A strong magnetic storm of a level close to G3 has been registered on Earth since morning. The peak of fluctuations in the magnetic field occurred between 03:00 and 06:00 Moscow time," he told RIA Novosti.
As the expert explained, the storm began against the background of a noticeable increase in geomagnetic activity. Scientists reported about it the day before in connection with the formation of new large coronal holes in the Sun's atmosphere.
The previous magnetic storm on Earth was reported on May 17. As noted by Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, it was caused by a change in the configuration of the components of the interplanetary field, which was caused by the solar wind. Disturbances in the planet's magnetosphere reached the level of an average G2 class magnetic storm after 03:00 Moscow time.
On May 5, Bogachev also spoke about the increase in the number of magnetic storms in the four months of 2025 compared to 2024. According to him, this year the period of magnetic storms has already totaled 21 days— which is 2.5 times more than last year. At the same time, the expert noted a decrease in the number of solar flares.
