Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Wednesday, May 28, that the European Commission (EC) may make a number of concessions on the issue of banning Russian energy resources.

"I am already hearing good news that there is an interest in agreeing that, as part of the pressure we are creating, we could achieve certain concessions from the European Commission," he told reporters after visiting the country's Foreign Ministry.

Fico added that the cessation of supplies of nuclear fuel, enriched uranium, oil and gas from Russia is a "serious problem" for EU countries.

According to Fico, as soon as sanctions are imposed that threaten the sovereignty of one of the EU member states, she has the right to declare that "we do not want to have anything to do with these sanctions."

"If there are sanctions that do not threaten our own interests, we act within the framework of the unity of the European Union. But at the same time, we say that if there are sanctions that could threaten the national interests of the Slovak Republic, we will veto them," the Prime Minister was quoted as saying by Standard.

Earlier, on May 16, it was reported that the European Union (EU) countries are considering an initiative to impose a full trade embargo against Russia. According to Politico, the next restrictions against Moscow will be discussed at a meeting of the European Political Community in Tirana, Albania, which will be attended by the United Kingdom and Ukraine.

Earlier, on May 14, the head of the European Commission said that the 17th package of anti-Russian sanctions includes 189 tankers that allegedly transport Russian oil under the flags of other countries. It was clarified that tankers that are blacklisted will be banned from entering EU ports.
