The leader of the German party Sarah Wagenknecht's Union for Reason and Justice, Sarah Wagenknecht, called for holding a referendum in the country on Germany's policy towards Ukraine, banning the supply of Taurus long—range cruise missiles to Kiev. She announced this on May 28 on her account on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to her, the actions of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz aimed at classifying information about arms supplies to Ukraine are irresponsible.

"First, the German government makes arms supplies secret, and then removes range restrictions — this only makes sense if it is serious about supplying Taurus missiles or has already done so. Such an attitude towards the German population <...> absolutely unacceptable. A nationwide vote is needed on Germany's policy towards Ukraine, in particular on the issue of banning the supply of Taurus missiles," Wagenknecht wrote on her page.

She noted that instead of "constantly pointing the finger at Russian President Vladimir Putin," Merz should have worked out a compromise line for negotiations with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

"Ukraine's refusal to join NATO would be proof that Zelensky and the Europeans want to conduct serious negotiations," Wagenknecht concluded.

On May 28, Friedrich Merz, at a press conference after talks with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, said that Germany would support Ukraine in developing its own long-range weapons. Berlin and Kiev plan to establish joint production of long-range missiles, but did not disclose details.

Earlier, on May 26, Merz said that Germany, along with Britain, France and the United States, had lifted range restrictions on military supplies to Ukraine. However, later in the day, Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil noted that Germany, contrary to the Chancellor's statement, had not changed its position on arms supplies to Ukraine.
