Ex-rector of KFU Gafurov sentenced to 22 years in a penal colony


The Savelovsky District Court of Moscow sentenced Ilshat Gafurov, the former rector of Kazan Federal University (KFU), who was accused of contract killing, to 22 years in a high-security penal colony. This was reported to Izvestia on May 28 by the court's press service.
20 million rubles were recovered from the ex-rector.
According to investigators, in 1999, Gafurov, being the head of Yelabuga, organized two assassination attempts on a local businessman, one of which ended with his murder in Moscow.
Gafurov was detained on December 22, 2021. The ex-rector was flown to Moscow, after which the court sent him to jail.
On May 21, a correspondent for Izvestia from the Savelovsky District Court of Moscow reported that the state prosecution had requested 25 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony for the former rector of Kazan Federal University (KFU) Ilshat Gafurov.
