- The political scientist ruled out the possibility of Germany replacing the United States in the issue of missiles for Kiev

Berlin will not be able to replace Washington in the matter of supplying weapons, in particular missiles, to Kiev. Political scientist Yuri Svetov told Izvestia about this on May 28.
On this day, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said at a press conference after talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky that Berlin would support Kiev in developing its own long-range weapons.
The expert noted that Germany would not be able to provide Ukraine with weapons to the extent that they were provided by the previous White House administration. He also recalled that such European missiles as, for example, Storm Shadow, had American components.
"Germany alone will not be able to cope with this. It's just that there is a weapon system that the Americans provided, but the Europeans don't have such weapons systems. By supplying their weapons to other countries, even to their allies, the Americans envisage the possibility of blocking the use of these weapons systems in case they want to turn them against the United States," Svetov said.
He noted that such an initiative shows that Germany will not stop in its quest to inflict a strategic defeat on the Russian Federation.
"This is evidence that they don't want to stop. And the main goal of both NATO and the European Union to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia remains in force," he concluded.
On May 26, Merz announced that Britain, France, Germany and the United States had lifted range restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine. Later, the co-chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Vice-Chancellor of Germany Lars Klingbeil denied Merz's statement. The next day, the German Chancellor said that he had talked about the decisions that had been taken a few months ago.
On May 28, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Merz's statements about lifting restrictions on the range of weapons supplied to Ukraine only provokes the continuation of the conflict in Ukraine. He also called it Germany's attempts to force Ukrainians to participate in it further.
