Merz announced the preparation of a new package of sanctions against Russia in the EU

The authorities of the European Union (EU) are preparing a new, 18th package of sanctions measures against Russia, while simultaneously discussing with the United States this project to tighten restrictions. This was announced on May 28 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a joint press conference with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky.
"Work has already begun on the 18th package of sanctions. We are negotiating with the United States on this issue. You know that the American government and the American Congress are in an intensive dialogue about further sanctions from America," the politician said. The broadcast was carried out on the Phoenix YouTube channel of the German government.
Merz added that the Bundestag and he personally are actively involved in this process. In addition, the Chancellor noted that Berlin will continue to provide military support to Kiev and even intends to expand it.
The Politico newspaper reported on May 27 that US President Donald Trump may decide this week whether Washington will strengthen restrictions against Moscow. The publication notes that the "cautious call" for the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions comes from pro-Ukrainian officials in the US government.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted at the same time that many media outlets were trying to disrupt the peace process in Ukraine and egg on the United States to impose new sanctions against Russia. He stressed that the Kremlin is aware of this, but at the same time notes the "balanced" approach of Trump.
