The Council of the European Union lifted economic sanctions against Syria

The Council of the European Union (EU) has officially approved the lifting of economic sanctions against Syria. This is evidenced by a statement on the association's website on May 28.
"The Council has adopted legal acts canceling all economic restrictive measures against Syria," the publication says.
It clarifies that the exception in this case is restrictions based on security considerations.
According to the statement, as part of the same approach, the EU Council excluded from its list 24 entities subject to the freezing of funds and economic resources. It is noted that some of the entities are banking organizations or companies that operate in key sectors of Syria's economic recovery.
The decision of the EU countries to completely lift economic sanctions against Syria was announced on May 20 by the head of the union's diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, following a meeting of the Council of the European Union in Brussels. According to her, the EU has supported the Syrian people for 14 years and intends to continue to do so.
In addition, on May 23, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the suspension of sanctions against Syria for 180 days in order to provide Damascus with electricity, water and humanitarian aid. He also stressed that the relevant measures were the first step towards new bilateral relations between the states.
