The European Commission (EC) is developing measures according to which the member states of the union should reduce water consumption by 10% by 2030 against the background of drought. This was reported on May 28 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper with reference to the draft initiative.

"Brussels will call on EU countries to reduce water consumption by at least 10% by 2030 as the bloc faces longer and more widespread droughts," the article says.

It is noted that this decision was made due to the EC's concern about the dwindling groundwater reserves in the European Union (EU). It is assumed that the proposal will set targets for the efficiency of water resources use. At the same time, the corresponding plan will be presented in June this year.

According to the publication, countries will also be asked to increase investments in wastewater treatment infrastructure in the amount of €23 billion annually.

Last March, it was noted that water shortages could lead to conflict between EU states that are not prepared for global warming. It was reported that the EC defines water scarcity as a problem that threatens almost all aspects of life — food production, infrastructure, economy and human health.
