- The Victory bloc appealed to the UN because of the persecution of the opposition in Moldova
Representatives of the Moldovan opposition bloc Pobeda have appealed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in connection with the political persecution of the opposition in Moldova. This was reported on May 28 in the Telegram channel of the association.
"We inform you about the critical situation in Moldova with the violation of the rights of residents and the violation of the foundations of democracy and the rule of law. The bloc acts as a political force representing the interests of Moldovans and speaking on behalf of a significant part of the opposition in the republic," the statement said.
It is reported that opposition members of the Moldovan parliament Irina Lozovan and Alexander Nesterovsky were sentenced to 6 and 12 years in prison in politically fabricated cases, and the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, was illegally arrested.
Hundreds of cases have been initiated against opposition representatives, and the courts, which are under pressure from the ruling PAS party, are handing down guilty verdicts, the appeal clarifies.
"In 2025, not only the opposition was under attack, but also hundreds of thousands of Moldovans," the bloc added.
On May 12, the court extended Hutsul's house arrest for another 30 days. According to her lawyer, the head of the Gagauz Autonomy may remain under house arrest until March 2026.
