MEP spoke about the prospects and consequences of Russia's asset confiscation in the EU

Anti-Russian sanctions are ineffective and an attempt to seize Russian Federation assets could amount to an act of war, Luxembourg member of the European Parliament Fernand Kartheiser said in an interview with Izvestia.

"I think such a seizure would be illegal under public international law and could be equated in fact to an act of war. Because normally you seize state assets that are protected by diplomatic immunity only in case of war, but we are at peace with Russia, so I think we can't do that," the politician said in an interview with Izvestia.

The sanctions will not be effective in the long term. They harm the European economy, because energy prices are too high, summarized MEP Kartheiser.

Earlier, the EU adopted the 17th package of sanctions against Russia, is now discussing the next set of restrictions.
