The €150 billion SAFE Fund for the Militarization of the European Union (EU) is a military credit union, but defense capability is born from strategic decisions of each country, not from pan-European funds. Elena Fritz, a member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, told Izvestia on May 27.

"SAFE is funded by joint EU loans, similar to the COVID-19 pandemic recovery fund. This means that Germany is responsible for its creditworthiness, but does not have national control over the use of funds. Sovereignty in security matters is transferred to Brussels, while the financial burden falls on the shoulders of German taxpayers," she said.

At the same time, the politician continued, the program allows Ukraine to fully participate in defense contracts without being a member of the EU. Kiev gets access to financing, industrial projects, strategic infrastructure without mandatory contributions, parliamentary control and democratic accountability.

"Even more absurd: the UK, which deliberately left the EU, will also be involved through a separate security agreement. British companies will be able to receive orders without participation in the EU budget, political obligations to the EU, but with a clear link to Washington," she said.

Fritz stressed that Germany "should not play the role of a payer in a defense union where contracts are awarded in Paris, implemented in Kiev, and profits go to London." According to her, those who argue that Europe should unite into one bloc do not understand that the world of the future will be multipolar.

"We need a sovereign security strategy formed by the nation, coordinated with partners, but controlled by its own people," the politician concluded.
