A possible truce between Israel and the radical Palestinian movement Hamas will not lead to the return of the state to a peaceful existence, and the organization's agreement to a cease-fire is an attempt to influence the positive perception of the organization. Andrey Manoilo, Professor of the Faculty of Political Science at Lomonosov Moscow State University, expressed this opinion on Tuesday, May 27.

"It seems that Israel has decided to finally resolve the issue with Hamas. It is extremely naive to think that this truce will lead to Israel returning to the formula of peaceful existence. Most likely, there is a game going on here designed for foreign policy circles and the audience," Manoilo said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to the expert, by agreeing to a truce, Hamas is trying to show that it is an organization that is not alien to humanism. The movement's statement shows that it is one of the parties to the conflict, and not a terrorist cell, he explained. At the moment, it is difficult to say whether Israel will enter into a dialogue with Hamas, Manoilo believes.

"Dialogue is possible only if the parties recognize each other as parties that can participate in this dialogue. This will lead to the fact that Israel will have to break a number of its positions in relation to Hamas, which it currently had and on which it relies. Will he do it or not? It's hard to say," he concluded.

Earlier, on May 26, the Hamas movement agreed to the proposal of the special envoy of the President of the United States, Steve Witkoff, for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, RT reports.

The Jerusalem Post reports that the US authorities have asked Israel to postpone a new operation in the Gaza Strip.

The AFP news agency previously reported, citing a Palestinian source close to the negotiations between Hamas and Israel, that the new proposal includes the return of 10 Israeli hostages, a 70-day cease-fire and a partial withdrawal of the Israeli military from the territory of the semi-enclave, Moscow 24 writes.

On May 20, it became known that Israel was withdrawing the senior negotiating team from Doha due to the refusal of the Palestinian Hamas movement to accept Witkoff's plan to free the hostages. It was reported that the Israeli side agreed to Witkoff's proposal, but Hamas continues to adhere to its refusal.
