The European Union (EU) is beginning to take on the forms of a military association, perhaps the EU is following the path of creating a new bloc within NATO. Political analyst Ivan Mezyuho told Izvestia about this on May 27.

On this day, the Council of the European Union approved the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to create a fund of €150 billion ("Actions to ensure security in Europe", SAFE) for investments in the defense of the association. The funds will be allocated to EU states on demand based on national plans. Payments will be made in the form of long-term loans. The program is also available for Ukraine.

"Obviously, the European Union, against the background of the changed US strategy for providing military assistance to Europe, is increasingly beginning to take on the forms of not only political and economic, but even military unification. In a sense, the countries of the European Union may be following the path of constructing a new EU military bloc within the framework of the North Atlantic Alliance," he said.

The political scientist noted that the authors of the initiative to create the EU defense fund expect to implement a strategy of "military Keynesianism" — a policy that should increase defense spending to stimulate European economic growth.

"It is not surprising that this program will be available to Ukraine, because for sure, purchases of ammunition, weapons, and ammunition directly for the governing bodies of the Kiev regime will take place through this fund, including from the Americans," Mezyuho said.

On May 19, the Reuters news agency, citing an unnamed European diplomat, reported that the countries of the European Union (EU) had agreed to create the European Security Action Fund (SAFE), aimed at strengthening the defense of territories, for €150 billion. It is specified that the initiative was proposed by the European Commission (EC).

On March 18, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Europe should have strong defenses by 2030, for which it needs to rearm and develop capabilities for reliable deterrence.
