The doctor warned about the danger of excessive consumption of bread

The abuse of bread can lead to neoplasms in the stomach. The fact is that fiber can cause problems when passing through the gastrointestinal tract. Andrey Kondrakhin, a doctor, candidate of medical Sciences, senior lecturer at the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, explained the mechanism of such complications in an interview with Izvestia on May 27.
According to media reports, the Muscovite needed an urgent operation after regularly eating bread. Allegedly, a huge neoplasm was found in her stomach — phytobezoar. It turned out that she ate too much vegetable fiber.
Kondrakhin confirmed that this is indeed possible, but he reassured: such complications are extremely rare — about 1% of consumers.
"This situation is indeed possible, although it is rare," the expert noted. "Coarse fiber in bread can cause problems when passing through the gastrointestinal tract, especially if a person already has peristalsis disorders."
"This can be compared to the reaction to persimmons, which in some people can also cause intestinal obstruction," the cardiologist drew a parallel.
Kondrakhin explained that the loaves are a freeze-dried product, which requires a large amount of liquid for normal digestion. If there is not enough water, the product may be poorly digested and retained in the body, which in exceptional cases leads to the formation of phytobezoars — foreign bodies in the stomach.
The doctor stressed that such complications are individual in nature and do not occur in everyone.
The expert noted that there are no strict restrictions on the use of bread rolls, but certain categories of people should be more careful. So, it is better for children and people with gastrointestinal problems to minimize the use of bread rolls or exclude them from the diet altogether.
The expert also refuted the widespread opinion about bread rolls as an absolutely useful product. According to him, proper nutrition implies balance, not an emphasis on any one type of food. Excessive fascination with even seemingly healthy loaves can upset this balance.
Earlier, on May 14, Kirill Lakhmai, a cardiovascular surgeon at the SM Clinic, told Izvestia about the causes of blood clots and the possibilities to correctly recognize this dangerous pathology. He clarified that red blood clots are the culprits of such common diseases as varicose veins and thrombophlebitis, which cause inflammatory processes in blood vessels and their deformation.
