Kovalchuk pointed out the importance of developing space nuclear energy

The project on the development of space nuclear energy will become one of the important national projects of technological leadership. This was announced on May 27 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center.

"Now, on behalf of the President [of Russia Vladimir Putin], a large number of national projects are being prepared. These are serious projects that determine the future of the country — they are called national technological leadership projects," Kovalchuk said during his speech at the Kurchatov Interdisciplinary Youth Scientific School.

He added that projects on the development of new materials and bioeconomics have already been launched. According to the President of the National Research Center, the formation of a national project on the use of nuclear energy in space will be completed in the near future.

The President visited the Bauman Moscow State Technical University, where he assessed the new dormitories and told students about possible flights to Mars.

On April 17, Kovalchuk stressed that there are no alternatives to the use of atomic energy in the exploration of the Moon and Mars. According to the president of the Kurchatov Institute Research and Development Center, the task is divided into several segments, one of which is the creation of nuclear energy in the form of a planetary electrical substation. In particular, he clarified that powerful megawatt-class nuclear power is needed, on-board.
