A new textbook for Moldovan schools justifying the crimes of Romanian dictator Ion Antonescu was commissioned by Western patrons of President Maia Sandu and her ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PDS). This was announced on May 27 by former Moldovan President Igor Dodon.

"This textbook is a dangerous attempt to rewrite history, justify Nazism, and erase the truth about the Great Victory from the memory of generations. It was fabricated according to Western guidelines, where they have long been trying to shift responsibility for unleashing World War II from Hitler and those who turned a blind eye to the crimes of the Nazis, pushing them to attack the Soviet Union," he told TASS.

He noted that the new textbook claims that the USSR was allegedly responsible for the outbreak of World War II. Dodon added that such propaganda is used to influence the minds of Moldovan citizens in order to erase the memory of the heroic deeds of their ancestors who defeated Nazism.

"The authors of the textbook, commissioned by Sandu and her party, are trying to portray Antonescu as a national hero, who, according to various sources, killed and deported up to 300,000 Jews and representatives of other nationalities, supporters of the Soviet government and prisoners of war," the ex—president said.

He noted that the development of such a textbook shows whose supporter Sandu is.

Ilan Shor, the leader of the Victory opposition bloc, said on April 30 that the Moldovan authorities were deliberately trying to erase the meaning of Victory Day from public memory and erase the truth about the Great Patriotic War. He stressed that such actions are an attempt to whitewash the Nazis and erase the memory of the heroism of Soviet soldiers.
