And the squid came: what premieres of TV series are waiting for us in June

June this year is not too rich in premieres — most of the creators of television series prefer. We can't wait for the fall, when the audience will steadily settle in front of the screens. However, quantity is offset by quality: in June, we are waiting for the finale of the most popular TV show in the history of Netflix, "The Squid Game." There is also the sequel to the Marvel superhero epic "Iron Heart", the psychological drama about teenagers "We Were Liars" and the crime film "High Season", shot in the vibrant landscapes of Southeast Asia. Izvestia is talking about the upcoming TV series premieres in June.
"The stick"
Apple TV+, June 4th
Price Cahill (Owen Wilson — "Loki", "The Grand Budapest Hotel") is a promising professional golfer, but one day his life begins to fall apart like a house of cards. A stellar career collapses overnight, the beloved wife files for divorce and sues the common house, leaving the former spouse without a roof over his head. For the next 20 years, Cahill exists by inertia, selling sports goods and teaching golf to retirees and bored housewives. But Price's life changes when he meets young Santi, a troubled teenager and a true golf genius. They both have to go through a difficult path to build a happy future for themselves, finding friends, loved ones and self-confidence.
Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Francis, the creators of "Little Miss Happiness," the series guarantees a lot of humor that doesn't need to be drowned out for children, a lot of touching moments, and one hundred percent reaching a family audience. In addition, the creators of the show were extremely successful in casting: Owen Wilson, with the appearance of a hereditary farmer, is the best fit for the role of a sports star, and charming actor and model Peter Dagher is relaxed and charming enough to become the second Timothy Chalamet with a small dose of luck, though rather in the genre of youth comedy.
"Papa Mia"
STS, June 9th
Nikolai Larionov (Pavel Maikov — "Brigade", "Girls with Makarov") shone on the rock scene in the 2000s, however, having gained popularity with the help of a single hit, he failed to stay at the top. Now he works as a security guard in a country village, regularly looks at the bottom of a bottle and gets into trouble. One of them is a meeting with his ex, who presents him with their 14-year—old daughter, whose existence Larionov had not suspected all these years, and immediately leaves the girl in his care because her new boyfriend proposed to her and bought vacation tickets. The girl doesn't like the infantile dad, who only knows how to make money for his new daughter, go to jail and complain about life, and she comes up with an insidious plan to get rid of him: she decides to arrange his personal life. This initiative results in the opening of a marriage agency by dad and daughter, which — before mom's vacation was over — brings them crazy money, allowing their daughter to pay off the school blackmailer, and dad to become a rock star again.
Such a crazy story of ascension from bums to heroes of the world charts can impress teenagers who dream of fame, but the trouble is, Papa Mia is labeled 16+. There is no doubt about its relevance.: it is not necessary to teach teenagers that at 14 their mother can suddenly throw them at an unknown drinking man. And the way to deal with a blackmailer by paying handsomely is not exactly what they teach in computer security classes. However, the mother and daughter in the series are called Zhanna and Kosha, which makes one suspect that there is a point in tightening the labeling to 18+. As they say, only under your personal responsibility. We warned you.
"High season"
Start, Okko, June 11th
Misha and Anya are having a romantic vacation in Vietnam. Misha is ready to propose to his beloved, but then the love story abruptly turns into a detective story. Anya's ex-boyfriend Sugar appears in front of the young people, whom she thought was dead, and the next day Misha is left alone: Anya mysteriously disappears. Misha tries to find his girlfriend, but the local police are indifferent to the stranger's problems. Then Misha begins to spin the story on his own. He has to discover the secrets of his ex-girlfriend's past, which she deliberately hid from him, and meet Tao, a captain in the People's Army of Vietnam, who fights hard and dreams of taking revenge on the criminal company involved in the death of her younger sister. They have to go through a lot, save each other from mortal danger and become truly close people.
The director, Stas Ivanov ("Daddy in Law", "The Germans", "U333"), specializes in crossing drama and a crime thriller, so there will be no less hysterical screams and female sobs than pistol shots at point—blank range and wild brawls. Brutal fans of the genre may like such an action, but they may be confused by Anya's mental tossing, who also will not go far out of the frame, deciding which is more pleasant to her — adrenaline or quiet female happiness.
"We were liars"
Prime, June 18
The Sinclair family are wealthy with a long history and an impressive list of luxury properties. Young Cadence Sinclair spends every summer on the private island of her grandfather, a successful businessman, millionaire and head of the clan. Together with her, teenagers of the same age, Cadence's cousins, swim on deserted beaches and have fun. One day, they are joined by a peer named Gat, an Indian by birth, a distant relative of one of the spouses of the numerous Sinclair clan. 15-year-old Cadence and Gat like each other, they have an affair... But then life changes dramatically — one day a girl is found in one of the remote bays, swallowed water and almost lost her memory. Two years later, she still can't remember what happened to her and her lover back then, and Cadence decides to return to the memorable places of her childhood to uncover this mystery.
The series is based on the bestseller of the same name by Emily Lockhart. It's a novel aimed at teenagers, and it's perfect for its audience. So there will be a number of fairly simple and moderately naive passages on the topic of social inequality and its injustice, and a lot of romantic looks from under eyelashes, girlish secrets and arguments in the style of "does he really like me?" - everything that a teenage audience likes so much. It took a lot of work for the creators of the series to bring the story for teenagers to the declared "psychological thriller."
"The Iron Heart"
Disney+, June 24th
15-year-old black Riri Williams (Dominic Thorne — "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever") is a true child prodigy. At the time, as a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she dreamed of creating something important and meaningful for all of humanity. Well, she's getting her way. Using high-tech materials stolen from the institute's laboratories, she creates an improved version of the Iron Man suit. Well, since, as you know from the comics, young geniuses are hunted with equal zeal by both special services and the mafia, Riri has no choice but to dress up in handmade superhero armor and begin to bring justice by throwing trucks with his bare hands and developing supersonic speeds in flight over the roofs of skyscrapers. However, as it soon turns out, another supervillain uses magic in defiance of technology, and it will take a while to figure out who is stronger, an elephant or a whale.
The creators of the Marvel cinematic universe managed not only to reshape its TV show format, but also to find a replacement for Iron Man, who was ruined by cruel screenwriters, and at the same time to cope with a task that even the showrunners of Bond could not handle — without scandals and audience accusations to put an underage black woman in the position of a superhero. It didn't work out with Agent 007 — maybe here it will be possible to win back the summons without pauses. I wonder how Ironhuman will be able to become one of the superhumans.
"The Squid Game"
Netflix, June 27th
The third season of the most popular TV show in Netflix history is launching less than six months after the second and, according to the creators of the series, will be the final one. According to rumors, the six episodes were originally supposed to be part of the second, but the creators, after thinking about it, decided to split the series into smaller parts, and perhaps at the same time to whet the audience's interest.
The second season of "The Squid Game", released in December 2024, broke the record for the first part of the TV show, attracting an audience of 68 million people in three days. Given the tension of the moment at which director Hwang Dong Hyuk cut short the narration, perhaps the third season will break this record as well. By today, the main organizer (Lee Byung-hoon) has regained control of the game, and the main protagonist (Song Ki-hoon) has vowed to destroy it. The audience is waiting for a tough confrontation, and, as promised by Hwang Dong Hyuk, an explosive finale that will completely turn the viewer's perception of the series upside down.
