Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto said on Tuesday, May 26, that he did not believe in Ukraine's ability to fulfill the criteria for joining the European Union (EU).

"To be honest, I cannot imagine that Ukraine will fulfill the necessary criteria in the foreseeable future. To be honest, I don't see that possibility. We have a lot of experience in interacting with them, there is a large Hungarian community living there, whose rights have been very grossly violated in recent years," the Hungarian politician said at the Yerevan Dialogue conference.

He added that the EU hypocritically calls European integration a merit-based process, but Ukraine's progress towards meeting European criteria is unnoticeable.

Szijjarto recalled that a survey has been taking place in Hungary since May 14, during which citizens of the country can express their views on the possibility of Ukraine joining the EU.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on May 18 that Kiev's accession to the EU poses a great threat to Budapest. According to the politician, Ukraine's integration into the union cannot be allowed.
