The National Police of Ukraine has uncovered an interregional criminal group that helped military personnel leave military units and training centers to escape abroad. This was reported on May 27 in the department.

It is specified that more than 300 law enforcement officers in six regions participated in the special operation to capture the defendants.

"According to the investigation, the criminal scheme was organized by 55-year-old and 65-year-old residents of the Chernivtsi region. A lawyer from Lviv was also involved in the case, who was looking for conscripts and, for a reward, persuaded them to flee from military units," the Telegram channel of the national police of Ukraine said.

In addition, according to the agency, five more people were involved in illegally transporting clients to Romania and Moldova, the cost of services ranged from $ 3 thousand to $ 6 thousand, and for illegal border crossing they charged from $ 12 thousand to $ 15 thousand. As a result, 25 conscripts tried to use these services, they were found and taken to the Ternopil zonal department of the military law enforcement service.

Ukrainian lawyer Vladislav Mikhailenko said on February 4 that the number of deserters who voluntarily left the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) could reach about 200 thousand people. He clarified that this number of those who left the service is approximate.

Prior to that, on January 24, Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Defense Committee Roman Kostenko said that the number of cases of desertion in the Armed Forces increased by 60% after the law that allowed deserters to return to service without criminal prosecution.
