The average car loan size has decreased in Russia

In April 2025, the average car loan in Russia decreased by 9.2% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 1.26 million rubles. This was announced on May 27 by the National Bureau of Credit Histories (NBKI). Compared to March, the average check for car loans increased by 2.8%.
The highest average car loan size among the regions of the Russian Federation was registered in Moscow (1.72 million rubles). Next in the ranking are the Moscow Region (1.58 million rubles), St. Petersburg (1.45 million rubles), Leningrad Region (1.41 million rubles) and Krasnodar Territory (1.38 million rubles).
The most serious reduction in the average car loan size was recorded in the Voronezh Region (-13.5%). It is followed by St. Petersburg (-13.2%), Moscow (-11.8%), Rostov (-11.3%) and Tula (-11.2%) regions. Only in the Irkutsk Region, among the 30 leading regions in the car loan segment, this indicator increased (+3.1%).
As explained by Alexey Volkov, NBKI's marketing director, the average amount of car loans issued began to decline in the middle of last year after the introduction of macroprudential restrictions. The low values are due to cheaper car loans due to changes in the market structure in favor of more budget cars, as well as subsidized rates from automakers, he noted.
On May 5, it was reported that the popularity of car loans in the first quarter of this year increased by 60.7% compared to the fourth quarter of last year. Most often, users were interested in a loan for the purchase of Lada Granta and Priora. The top five of this rating also includes Hyundai Solaris, Kia Rio and Toyota Camry.
Prior to that, on April 28, a financial expert shared tips on buying a car at a high loan rate. It is necessary to pay attention to the possibilities of a subsidy program, discounts and promotions from dealers, as well as a preferential lending program, he listed.
