The statement by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that the European Union (EU) is likely to impose sanctions against Slovakia is absolutely unacceptable, as he demonstrates a "one-mindedness policy." This was announced on May 27 by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

"What the Chancellor said is unacceptable in modern Europe, unacceptable. If someone thinks that I will not allow myself to express my own opinion, then he is very mistaken," Slovak Telegram channels quoted him as saying.

Fico added that if someone wants to pursue a "policy of one single binding opinion," it means the complete end of democracy, the Newspaper notes.Ru». The Prime Minister of Slovakia noted that he was ready to hold a direct dialogue with the German Chancellor, as he did not see anything in his country's policy that would violate the rules of the rule of law.

Merz said on May 26 that Germany would consider suspending EU funding for Slovakia if the country continued to deviate from the general direction of the bloc. He noted that Member States violating the rule of law may face infringement proceedings. As noted by Bloomberg, Bratislava is increasingly causing concern in Brussels.

In turn, Fico said on May 17 that he would support a referendum on the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions in his country if such a vote took place. The head of the Slovak government stressed that sanctions against Russia often harm the European Union itself.
