Western countries made two huge miscalculations when they expected to defeat Russia during the conflict with Ukraine.: These are useless measures to impose sanctions, as well as underestimating the military capabilities of the Russian army. This was announced on May 26 by Richard Wolf, a professor at the University of Massachusetts in the USA, an economist.

"The West underestimated Russia's capabilities in conducting large-scale military operations and overestimated the power of sanctions. <...> We just miscalculated on two fronts. And now they have lost, but they are not ready to admit their mistakes," the economist said in an interview with Norwegian political scientist Glenn Diesen on his YouTube channel.

The economist noted that when armed conflicts occur, it is necessary to take into account the large role of uncertainty in their outcome. Western countries, Wolf said, were overconfident in planning their actions, so they made critical mistakes, notesГазета.Ru ".

Russia is clearly superior to Ukraine in terms of human resources, and this fact should have already made the West think, the economist believes.

"Even if the situation was different in February 2022, Russia has a huge industrial potential that allows it to increase production and consolidate its economic dominance," the expert noted.

John Mearsheimer, a professor at the University of Chicago, noted on May 23 that the cause of the conflict in Ukraine was the actions of the United States and the European Union (EU) countries. The expert stressed that from the point of view of Russia's interests, Russian President Vladimir Putin acted strategically correctly, since since April 2008, when NATO announced its intention to accept Ukraine into the alliance, Putin has made it clear that he and the Russian elite consider Ukraine's membership in NATO as an existential threat to Russia.
