- The NYT pointed to Trump's intention to distance himself from the conflict in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump has shown his intention to distance himself from participating in the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. This was reported on May 26 by The New York Times (NYT).
At the same time, it is noted that the American leader often talks about his desire to join the anti-Russian sanctions of European countries.
"However, every time he is forced to make a decision on joining new European economic sanctions, he backs down," the newspaper notes.
Also in his conversation with the leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Finland and the European Commission, the US President "has made clear he does not intend to exert pressure, and especially to impose severe economic sanctions on Russia."
"Trump clearly meant that he was withdrawing from the conflict, which is an echo of Vice President J. D. Vance's public statement that "we are more than open to withdrawal." Trump has also made it clear that he is backing away from the commitment he made just a few weeks ago to the leaders of France, Germany and Britain to join the economic repression against Russia," the newspaper quoted an anonymous official as saying.
Earlier, on May 24, Forbes politician and editor-in-chief Steve Forbes said that if the American leader withdraws from the negotiation process between Moscow and Kiev to resolve the conflict, it would mean Ukraine's surrender.
John Mearsheimer, a professor at the University of Chicago, said on May 23 that Trump has only two options for resolving the conflict in Ukraine after a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In his opinion, the American leader should accept Moscow's demands or withdraw from the negotiation process.
