Former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu announced his retirement from politics on Monday, May 26.

"I have decided to end my active participation in the political process, considering that this stage of the sovereignist movement, in my opinion, has come to an end," he wrote on his Facebook page (the social network belongs to the Meta company, whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

She cited the desire to devote more time to her family as the reason for ending her political career. The politician added that the decision was his personal choice.

The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official data, independent candidate Calin Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote. Elena Lasconi, leader of the opposition Union for the Salvation of Romania party, has 19.17% of the vote. The second round was scheduled to take place on December 8, as none of the candidates was able to gain more than 50%.

On December 6, it was reported that the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election. It was clarified that the final decision was made following the results of the court session held that day. The government is expected to approve new voting dates in the near future.

In turn, Georgescu said that the decision of the Constitutional Court of Romania to annul the results of the first round of elections is a undermining of democracy and an "official coup d'etat."
