At least 11 people were killed when a three-story building collapsed in the city of Touba in western Senegal. This was reported on May 26 by Dacaractu, citing local authorities.

The collapsed building was under reconstruction. Among the dead are bricklayers and a cafe vendor. Seven more people were injured and were taken to hospital in serious condition. Rescuers continue to dismantle the rubble in the hope of finding survivors.

The cause of the collapse is still unknown. Moussa Tinet, Director General of Housing Construction in the region, said that the reason could be "non-compliance with building regulations," condemning the incorrect dimensions of the beams and the use of substandard materials. According to him, "it is necessary to thoroughly investigate the causes and identify possible negligence" in order to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

According to local residents, there were between 17 and 18 people in the building at the time of the tragedy. The total number of dead and injured suggests that no further increase in casualties is expected, with the exception of those currently in the intensive care unit.

The identity of the contractor responsible for the renovation has not yet been disclosed. It is specified that the investigation is ongoing.

On May 22, Reuters reported that 289 miners were stranded at a gold mine near Johannesburg, the largest city in the Republic of South Africa. According to media reports, the workers were at the collection point, and the mine's owner provided them with food. A company representative said that after the inspection of the mine, workers will begin to be lifted to the surface.
